ChatGPT and Google AI Overviews build their answers in genuinely different ways. Here's how each one works, what OptimizeCamp captures every time we ask a question on your behalf, and why you need both.

Quick recap: what’s an answer engine?

If you haven’t read AEO, GEO & AI search explained yet, the short version is this: an answer engine is any system that responds to a question with a written answer instead of a list of links to click through. ChatGPT and Google’s AI Overviews are both answer engines. This page is about the mechanics of those two specifically — how each one actually produces the words a user reads, and what OptimizeCamp pulls out of that process every time it runs.

The two tracks we track today

OptimizeCamp measures your brand’s presence on two answer engines right now: ChatGPT and Google AI Overviews. They’re built on similar underlying technology (large language models), but they answer questions through very different paths — which is exactly why tracking only one of them would leave you flying blind on the other.

How ChatGPT builds an answer

For every tracked prompt, OptimizeCamp sends your question straight to a ChatGPT-family model — the same words a real user would type, with no extra instructions layered on top, so the answer approximates what a person would actually see.

The question is sent as-is

There’s no system prompt coaching the model toward any particular answer. Your tracked prompt goes in close to verbatim, the same way a consumer’s question would.

Web search is switched on — every time

Consumer ChatGPT decides for itself whether a question is worth searching the web for. For tracking, OptimizeCamp forces web search on for every run, so every answer is grounded in a fresh search rather than leaning purely on what the model memorized during training. This keeps results current and comparable run over run.

It answers quickly, like a normal chat

The model is configured for fast, direct answers rather than a slow multi-step “reasoning” mode — matching how most people actually experience ChatGPT day to day.

Citations come from the model’s own source list

When the model cites a page, OptimizeCamp reads that citation straight from the structured list of sources the model returns — never by scanning the prose for links. That keeps the citation list exact: the right URL, in the right order, every time.

How Google AI Overviews differ

A Google AI Overview is the AI-generated summary box that can appear above the normal blue-link results on a Google search. The mechanics are different from ChatGPT in one important way: Google decides, per search, whether a query deserves an AI Overview at all. Plenty of searches still return a plain list of links with no overview whatsoever.

No AI Overview shown is still a result

When a tracked prompt doesn’t trigger an AI Overview, OptimizeCamp doesn’t treat that as an error or a blank spot — it records it as a real, meaningful outcome: nothing was shown to the searcher for that question. That tells you something true about your visibility on that surface, so it’s counted rather than skipped. Contrast that with ChatGPT, which — because it’s a direct conversation — essentially always produces some answer.

When an AI Overview does appear, OptimizeCamp captures the overview’s text and the list of source links it references — the same shape of data as a ChatGPT answer: text plus an ordered citation list.

OptimizeCamp is upfront about data quality: if a platform’s results for your project aren’t coming from a live call yet, the app labels that plainly next to the number — you’ll never see simulated data presented as a real answer.

What we capture from every run

Whichever platform answers, OptimizeCamp stores the same four things for every run:

Why you need both

ChatGPT and Google AI Overviews are different mechanisms answering different audiences in different moments — a forced web search inside a chat conversation versus a summary Google chooses to show, or not, above its normal results. A brand can be strong on one and nearly invisible on the other; nothing about your ChatGPT presence predicts your Google AI Overview presence, or vice versa. That’s why OptimizeCamp scores each platform separately, side by side, rather than blending them into one number you can’t act on.

More platforms are coming

OptimizeCamp is built so that answer engines are pluggable — each one is a self-contained adapter that knows how to ask its platform a question and hand back an answer in the same shape (text plus citations). That means adding a new answer engine later — Perplexity, Microsoft Copilot, Google’s Gemini — doesn’t require rebuilding anything upstream: the scoring, the dashboard, and the alerts all already know what to do with a new platform’s answers once it’s plugged in.
